Community

While disasters can strike our region or the country, impact is always felt at the community level although it may hit one or several communities at once. These communities constitute what is referred to as “disaster fronts”. Being at the forefronts, communities need to have capacity to respond to threats themselves. It is for this reason that communities should be involved in managing the risks that may threaten their well-being.

Earthquake Survivors Afternoon Tea

Nearly 300 survivors of the 1931 Hawke's Bay Earthquake gathered with family and friends at Napier Boys' High School on Sunday, 14 February 2010 for the annual commemorative afternoon tea.

The annual event was hosted as a joint community effort with Napier City Council, Napier Boys' High School, Hawke's Bay Regional Council, Art Deco Trust, and The Tennyson being members of the organising committee.

A memorial cake was cut and tea and sandwiches were served and musical entertainment provided, but for many it was a chance to share their survival stories.

“The event is to honour these survivors and their memories of the event and people affected, and give them a chance to catch up with others who went through this dreadful event,” said Deputy Mayor Kathie Furlong of Napier City Council.

The New Zealand Red Cross also supported the event by providing name badges for attendees to wear based on a replica of the Red Cross evacuee tags used in the 1931 earthquake, and they also assisted people to complete the guest book of attendees.

“It was truly a community event and we have been thrilled with the generosity of many organisations and businesses who contributed to make this a special afternoon for our special senior citizens.”
